As the semester comes to a close, ASFA will be saying goodbye to one of the school’s beloved long-tenured employees. Jason Akins, known to students as Mr. J, will be departing from his role as the student care coordinator, school nurse and dorm director. His last day will be Friday, Dec. 16.
Akins was offered an opportunity to become a consultant for homebound kids in Tacoma, Washington, in mid-November. Upon returning from ASFA’s Thanksgiving break, he decided that he would take up this opportunity.
Akins, who has been with ASFA for 14 years, says it was a tough decision. “I went back and forth a lot. I’m sad. I’ve been here a long time.”
Akins also mentions the timing of his departure alongside the suspicious activity that has been occurring recently. “I feel really guilty about leaving because I feel like that is one of my things that is my responsibility to protect kids from.”
His departure is not only hard on him, but it is going to be a difficult change for the students of the school. While his job openings have been posted, Nurse Teresa Lancaster is going to be taking over as chief school nurse for the time being, and one of the RAs, Chi Chi, is going to be handling night duties in the dorms.
On Dec. 28th, Akins will officially depart for his new job. The faculty, the students, and the school as a whole are going to miss him. Things most definitely will not be the same without Jason Akins here on duty.
