ASFA Science Bowl team headed to nationals

ASFA's Science Bowl team poses after Team A wins the state-level competition on Jan. 28. Team A will head to Washington, DC, later this spring to represent Alabama in the National Science Bowl.

An ASFA Science Bowl team is headed to nationals after winning at the regional level.

The National Science Bowl is a scholar's bowl-style competition where pairs of teams face off against each other to answer questions related to various areas of science. The competition uses a “buzz-in” format where correct answers earn points for a team and a chance for bonus questions for more points. ASFA has three teams, A, B and C.

Recently, ASFA took part in the state-level Science Bowl competition. The state competition begins with a round-robin style round, followed by an elimination round. In the elimination round, only the top four teams earn a spot to participate in the finals bracket.

Team A, consisting of Eli Mrug, Daniel Zhao, Rishi Yellamraju, Dexter Gard, and Cynthia Liu, placed second in the elimination round. Becker Barghothi, McNair Shah, William Peng, Zoya Aleezada, and Abhai Anand, the members of Team B, got fourth place in the elimination round.

Later, Team A was able to win in the finals bracket by 30 points. The team's hard work and preparation paid off against tough competition from other schools.

After winning the state competition, Team A has advanced to the national level, representing Alabama in Washington, DC. The national competition takes place from April 27-May 1, 2023, and will feature a similar format to the state level, but with much more challenging questions.
