PHOTO GALLERY | ASFA upperclassmen reflect on Saturday's prom

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

Last Saturday’s Prom rolled out the red carpet for the juniors and seniors of ASFA at the Birmingham Museum of Art. The majority of the night’s festivities took place in the cafe space of the venue, with the main space including a photo booth, mocktail bar, food and refreshments, and of course, the DJ booth and dancefloor.

About halfway through the event, students and guests gathered to listen to the announcement of prom royalty, where a beating drum roll was asked of the crowd right up until the selected names were called. Ka’Lise Benson and Phoenix James of the Theatre Arts department were announced junior royalty, with Justin Duncan (Theatre Arts) and Jossy Peterson (Math/Science) announced senior prom king and queen respectively.

“It felt like a movie,” says Jossy, when asked how she felt hearing her name called to come up and receive her crown.

Movie-like is not far off, as the event’s theme, Mystery at the Met Gala, was brought to life with an assortment of dramatic decor spread throughout the venue. Things like the glittering photobooth with gold and black spotted balloons, as well as an overall shadowed lighting with hints of red helped establish a mood of both elegance and suspense. Many attendants decided to reflect the theme through their outfits, choosing vibrant reds and gilded fabrics to match the scene.

“We were going for dark and mysterious… classy but also kind of nasty,” Visual Arts junior, Rose Kimbrough tells the Star. Rose, along with other members of the Prom Planning Committee, organized the volunteer workers, music, and the distribution of photos taken through the course of the night. She says there were a few hiccups in the planning process, including some missing feather centerpieces, helium balloons, and a bigger red carpet that didn’t arrive quite on time, but in the end she seems confident that this year’s party worked out just fine.

“All in all,” she says, “I’d say it was a successful 2023 ASFA prom.”

Below, check out a video featuring prom photos, made by Math/Science senior Dexter Gard for Mr. Damien Lahey's filmmaking class.
