Shantay Williams has been hired as ASFA's new Residential Life Coordinator. Williams will take the lead in providing dorm students with a "home away from home," which is a point of emphasis in ASFA's recent strategic planning initiative.
"Shantay brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role, and we are excited to have her guide and support our residential life program," says Kim Strickland, ASFA's director of Student Support Services.
Our own Ollie Caillier, who also lives in the dorm, took the opportunity to interview Ms. Williams to get a sense of how she's easing into this role so far:
1. What drew you to the job of dorm director initially?
One of my sorority sisters called me and told me about the position. She knew that I had previous residential life experience and thought that she should call me and tell me about it since I live in Birmingham.
2. What are your goals for this year? Is there anything you really want to accomplish with the dorm students?
One of my goals this year is to observe how the dorm currently operates and then implement new and improved practices to make sure that the dorm is operating effectively and efficiently. I want to help the students feel like this is a safe and secure place to live and develop.
3. What is it about this job that you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the students the most. They are all so unique and creative. They teach me so many things and the things they teach me help me to be a better RLC, student, and adult.
4. What are some of the things that you want the new dorm council to work on? Is it going to function exactly the same as the previous dorm council, or will there be some revisions?
We are currently working on developing a new dorm council. The first thing we will work on is developing some policies and procedures. I want to see the dorm council be a voice for the dorm students. I want to see more town halls, more programming, and more respect for everyone that lives in the dorm.
5. Is there anything about the way that the dorm runs that you wish to change? If so, how?
I wish the communication among all stakeholders of the dorm was better. We are currently working on and testing different ways to communicate with everyone. It will just take a little more time and testing to eventually have all our systems communicating with each other.
