With the first week of February already upon us, ASFA is ushering in the celebration of Black History Month with a BSU-hosted Black History FOCUS day this Friday.

The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Jemison Day Theater and will last about 30 minutes long. This will be followed by a Black business fair, similar to the previous year, where seven Black-owned businesses will be available to talk to and purchase goods from, including NaughtyButNice Kettle Corn Company, Bridge+Root clothing, visual artist Yogi Dada, and many others.

“There’s going to be a short stepping performance at the finale of the program,” says Creative Writing junior Kyra Richardson. She is participating as one of the aforementioned steppers towards the end of the 30-minute event and, while excited about the performance, doesn’t want to spoil too much about what’s to come this Friday.

“I do think there should be more activities during or outside of school that aren’t FOCUS days,” Kyra comments when asked if there are any additional things she’d like to see ASFA do for Black History Month.

“FOCUS days are time-consuming,” she follows up, suggesting a more spread approach involving more events and activities involving Black History scattered throughout the month, in turn allowing for a deeper exploration of the subject while maintaining the free flow of school.

The Star will be covering more Black History Month stories all through February, so stay tuned and don’t forget to bring money this Friday to support your local Black businesses.
