With the Thanksgiving break coming up, many in the ASFA community are feeling festive. Among those are the Child Nutrition Program staff, who are preparing for the holiday with a special lunch. Child Nutrition Supervisor Cynthia Orcutt says she is excited to present the Thanksgiving-themed meal this Thursday, Nov. 17, during a slightly-extended lunch period for ASFA students.

“We like to celebrate Thanksgiving and we like sharing with the kids. It’s a great way to say thank you to the school and the students,” Orcutt says.

Presented with this meal is, of, course turkey, and cornbread dressing sided with cranberry sauce. There will be sides of collard greens, mac and cheese, green beans, and sweet potato casserole.

Orcutt mentioned that some of these recipes are brought from the home of the cafeteria staff. They wish to share their family recipes with the students as this holiday is very important to them.

During this time the lunch periods will be extended to give students, staff and faculty more time to go through the line and enjoy lunch. This extra time allows for more time for the lunch line to move without taking away from the time students have to eat lunch.

Students also recognize this day as something special that the school shares.

“Personally, I look forward to this planned lunch,” one student says, “the Thanksgiving-themed lunch is a fun tradition that I look forward to every year. It is such a special thing the ASFA lunch staff does for us.” The extended time and themed meal give something for students to look forward to before the holiday, a highlight of the week before break. It also gives many students who don’t celebrate or participate in Thanksgiving in the traditional way a taste of the holiday.

This lunch is something special to both the staff and the students, sharing the Southern thanksgiving tradition with the school from the cafeteria staff. Orcutt finishes, “I hope they appreciate it.”
