This Friday, the ASFA Dance department will perform its Senior Choreography showcase for the school. It features the work of this year's four Dance seniors: Alex Sullen, Paige Scott, Zoe Horton, and Madi McAlister. The performance will take place in the Dorothy Jemison Day Theater at about 1 p.m., following a FOCUS schedule.
Senior Choreography is a collection of pieces choreographed by the seniors and performed by a cast of Dance students. Each year, ASFA’s dance seniors are able to express themselves through a performance that they have potentially been developing for years. Seniors can spend years planning their projects, allowing ideas to flow and develop for when they do choreograph their final performance. It highlights the individuality and creativity within the Dance department.
The opening act is a collection of scenes from La Bayadere. The second, and closing act, consists of the four, unique senior choreography performances, born from the experience of the seniors.
Madi McAlister is one of this year's Dance seniors. Her piece, If Not Now, When?, is inspired by her teenage years and the teenage experience. It focuses deeply on the fabrication of the young imagination and how it plays a big role in personal development.
While the Dance seniors have spent time fantasizing about their pieces, starting the work of is where the process really takes off. The younger dancers audition for the seniors' projects, allowing the seniors to envision how their younger classmates would fit into their pieces. After the cast has been completed, seniors need to be able to communicate with their dancers to bring their visions to life.
This performance will also be shown on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the DJD.
