Films in Focus: Creep (2014) - A Mockumentary that Cuts Too Close to Reality

Mairwen Jones & Allie Rezek

Creep is a movie about a man named Aaron who accepts a job offer from a stranger named Josef. Josef wants Aaron to film a documentary for his unborn child so it can know him personally before he passes in three months due to cancer. So Aaron begins to document the type of human Josef seems to be. That is also how the story is told, through the clips that Josef hopes his child will watch in the future. But Josef starts acting strange when he invites Aaron to stay the night after the job is finished when Aaron should be heading home. Josef hopes to become buddies with the help of alcohol and disturbing realities. Even after the sob stories he provides, Aaron can’t look past all of the disturbances that keep occurring. Little does he know, he should have never taken on the job of becoming the cameraman for this stranger's documentary to begin with.

Although this film is not violent, it is still considered a horror movie. Mockumentaries often go hand-in-hand with horror and because of the unfocused camera during many parts of Creep, you could expect a jump scare at any given moment. This distinct way of making a movie feels more real and gives direct attention to the audience. Viewers can feel a sense of uneasiness through Aaron's camera; that feeling thickens as the plot continues. The camera is unsteady and crooked at times, giving a more personal view of what is happening on the other side of the screen. The uncertainty of the camera makes you feel unsure of where the story is going or if it could abruptly stop, leaving a gaping hole for what happens to Aaron. But maybe that is not what happens; perhaps he goes insane with the help of Josef, the camera documenting the trial of events to occur once the two begin ripping hairs from their heads. This lens captures many doubts about where the story will go, and it fits perfectly with the horror genre.

Familiar characteristics are found in Josef and other fictional characters from thrilling movies, which makes him similar to what is expected of a mysterious stranger. However, this movie still plays around with his character differently in unexpected, disturbing ways. This factor adds to the horror elements played within this classical style. This habitual character, the one that seems a little off, where that suspicion grows as you continue your trek (sometimes literally) through the movie, is what people want from a horror movie, with this one delivering those expectations but also new and refreshing revisions to the personality.

Throughout Creep, you will be on the edge of your seat, aching to know what happens next. The camera continues to catch footage of strange occurrences that the characters may not even know were being filmed, like in many other mockumentaries. Because of this style, but also because of the realistic and charming characters, this movie induces fear and creates strange experiences for the fictional characters (who feel like real people).

If you are looking for an exciting film with strange characters and many twists and turns, Creep is for you. It is a thriller that blurs the line between fiction and reality that will leave you shaken. Some moments just feel so real that there are points where you will forget you are watching a piece of fiction. However, Creep's interpretation of different ways a predator could get closer to its prey is one like no other. The realism of Creep, like other mockumentaries, is a terrifying way for horror movies to be experienced and is a genre we greatly recommend.
