The first-ever "Lunch-and-Learn" short course in bookmaking is, well, in the books. By all accounts, the students in the course learned a lot and became extremely invested in the process.
"I live for the little gasp of delight that escapes whenever they finish a book for the first time or pull their first sheet of paper," says CW & Media Arts instructor Mazerick Betko, who led the seven-week course. "My favorite moments have been when everyone claps for each other each time someone finishes their book. They beam when their creative inclinations are realized and the result of intense focus and attention to detail is observable. I'm so proud of everyone who stuck it out through the process and was able to make their own paper by hand and then make a book with that material."
Betko is now in the planning stages of designing a semester-long elective in book arts for next school year and will be offering another Media Arts short course next semester -- this time in optimizing cell phones for video recording. Stay tuned to the morning announcements for more details!
