Music department makes debut in newly renovated Recital Hall

Updated: Aug 26

In the long awaited completion of the Recital Hall renovation project that began in summer 2023, the Music department is set to host its first chamber music recital in the space today at 3 p.m.

According to Music department chair Alex Fokkens, the Recital Hall has undergone a complete change. The reworking of the hall allows for not only better acoustics with the addition of an acoustic shell, but also better soundproofing between the Recital Hall and the Black Box Theatre. And with new space for storage, the Recital Hall now allows for bigger ensembles and the addition of an actual stage.

Additionally, many Music students are now appreciative of the fact that they no longer have to practice in places like the library, or the Creative Writing wing.

Senior music student Kai Jamison noted, “We [had] huge clunky risers, but now we have the chairs and a slightly raised stage, and I think that's a huge improvement.”

Senior music student Lu McEntrye and junior music student Taliyah Austin mentioned that there is going to be a new addition of a recording studio. This will make auditions easier and improve sound, they said.

Mr. Fokkens said that today's recital will include a brass ensemble and flute duet, women choir, saxophone ensemble, and many others.
