The Music department’s upcoming concert on Friday, Oct. 21, is set to spark a fire in the hearts of the audience, the theme of the performance being “The Time Is Now.” ASFA students will attend a school day performance at 1 p.m., followed by the later nightly performance at 7 p.m.

All the large ensembles will show what they’ve been working on during the fall semester, featuring the ASFA Orchestra, the ASFA Jazz Ensemble, the ASFA Choir, and the vocal ensemble Concerto Della Donne. The concert will also feature a guest appearance from the Creative Writing department’s Ashley Jones, performing her poetry alongside the orchestra during "Portrait of Harriet," a piece from composer Rebekah Griffin Greene where music and the spoken word will meet in a collaborative work.

“This show is all about taking charge and using the power you have to change the world,” said Aiden Barry, senior cellist.

And according to Music department chair Alex Fokkens, the present is the perfect time for such a change to come.

“['The Time is Now'] is chosen to encompass the post-pandemic choices that we have,” Mr. Fokkens tells the Star.

It’s about seeing the present as an opportunity, taking the time to look around and figure out how you can take initiative with the resources you have to set out and make a positive difference in a world trying to rebuild. A world that needs help.

“After great upheaval and challenge, when the regular daily activities are put ‘on hold’ … we are given the chance to evaluate what is important to us and even to the world,” he said. “To reflect and come back stronger, more aware and more active.”
