On Oct. 11, 2023, the ASFA Dance department participated in the Walk with Amal movement, which brings awareness to not only human rights, but to child refugees. Amal is a bigger than life puppet that is worked by a puppeteer walking on stilts and two side puppeteers who work her hands. The dancers performed alongside the Yaa Samer Dance theater group in a piece called “When the Children Gather.” This piece represents the Children’s Crusade which took place in Birmingham in 1963. This crusade eventually led to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
