At the end of the 2022-23 school year, Mrs. Cumbee Tyndal will be retiring from the Visual Arts department after 28 years of employment. She plans to stay in Birmingham to work on other hobbies.
"I will be playing in a piano recital this spring, so I will be working towards that," she said. "I also love to paint, hike, golf, and garden."
She also said that in her retirement, she wanted to do community work for the city of Birmingham, "particularly focusing on voting access, gun violence and un-homed women and children."
Even though her children live out of town, she plans to visit them. She's going on her first trip to Belize with her youngest son and his girlfriend. She said, "It has the second largest barrier reef in the world so we will be doing a lot of snorkeling."
About ASFA, she said, "ASFA has been a sanctuary for me. I love being in this creative hub and the energy it produces. One of my favorite things about teaching at ASFA is the production of the senior exhibition. It is a delight to watch a young person develop artistically over a course of many years and to present an exhibition which exceeds their own expectations. It's a tremendous pleasure to watch and to be a part of this development."
It's no question that the students at ASFA will miss her. Especially with the upperclassmen she's worked with, she's helped so many people work towards their senior exhibit and has been an invaluable part of the ASFA community.
