The Vulcan Materials Gallery at ASFA is currently showcasing Figure Grounded, an exhibit featuring the works of six local Black artists. The artists are Erin LeAnn Mitchell, Jillian Marie Browning, Steven Mark Finley Jr., Roscoe Hall, Amber Quinn, and Vincent Frimpong (Sniper). The pieces range from quilting to sculpture, photography, paint, and even poetry – with Creative Writing faculty member Ashley Jones and Erin LeAnn Mitchell mixing poetry and paint to create a tapestry piece.
Anne Herbert, faculty member of the Visual Arts department and the curator of the gallery showing, says that the artists who work is currently on display “are all Black artists who use the figure in their work to explore identity and experience.”
The curatorial statement says: “Whether imagining black futures, reexamining black pasts, or acknowledging the present, these artists use the body as evidence of those realities. But more than mere depiction, for these artists, using the figure is a political act – a declaration of presence, significance, and pride.”
The gallery showing will be on view anytime during the school day through Friday, March 3, so make sure to stop by next time you’re in the lobby.
